PE

Vision

The vision for physical education at Mawnan School is for all children to experience a high-quality PE curriculum that is delivered with confidence and expertise to allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle and concepts such as fair play and respect, that will lead to life-long participation. We want all children to be inspired to compete fairly, take up new hobbies, enjoy being physically active and have the desire to succeed.

Intent

At Mawnan School we believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes physical growth and development. It also allows children to develop a range of important cognitive skills such as decision-making, social skills such as team work and communication.  Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. We aim to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical and mental well-being. We want all children to experience a wide variety of fundamental skills and sports which will enhance life-long participation and choices.

Early Years

  •        To focus on developing gross and fine motor skills.

KS1

  •        To teach children fundamental movement skills.
  •        To provide opportunities for children to learn and apply these skills in competitive situations and in context.
  •        To develop their knowledge of simple tactics in game type activities.

KS2

  •        To develop children’s fundamental movement skills
  •        To teach and develop children’s skills and knowledge that is sport specific.
  •        To progress playing in school competitions within the school partnership and leagues.
Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to ensure children learn, develop and apply the 12 fundamental skills, through the REAL PE scheme, which they are then able to apply in any physical activity, as well as in their day to day life. Sporting provision at Mawnan ensures that our children have the chance to participate and excel in a wide range of sports delivered by both teaching staff and professional coaches. All children in years 3 and 4 have weekly swimming lessons during the spring term.

There are numerous extra-curricular clubs held throughout the year which are available for KS1 and KS2 pupils. Some of these include football, netball, dance, cricket, multi-skills etc.

Impact

Physical education plays an important role in Mawnan School life where staff and pupils are passionate and enjoy every activity they take part in. We measure the impact of fundamental skills through the Real PE assessment wheel and observing how pupils apply these skills.

The up-take for sporting and physical extra-curricular clubs held throughout the year is popular. Children of Mawnan School are taking their passion for sport and physical activity outside of school by joining local clubs and all children across both key stages are representing the school at inter school competitions.
