The History of Mawnan School

Mawnan Church of England VA Primary School was founded in 1834, beginning a connection with our village community that now spans almost two centuries.

The school originally stood in the centre of Mawnan Smith. In 1972, it moved to its present site, beginning a new chapter while retaining its Church of England foundation and its place at the heart of village life.

Our school’s history forms part of the wider story of Mawnan Smith. The village takes its name from the blacksmiths’ smithies that once served the area. Its position close to the Helford River connected the community with the movement of goods and produce across the river to the Lizard peninsula.

Today, our beautiful surroundings continue to enrich children’s learning. Woodland, the Helford River, the sea and nearby beaches offer opportunities to explore local history, geography and the natural world. The area’s footpaths and nearby gardens, including Glendurgan and Trebah, help children discover the distinctive landscape and heritage of this part of Cornwall.

Our school grounds provide space for learning, discovery and play, with hard playing areas, a playing field, school gardens and an adventure play area. A woodland nature reserve, a short walk away, offers further opportunities to investigate habitats, observe seasonal changes and develop care for the environment.

Although much has changed since 1834, our commitment to children and our community remains at the centre of school life. Our Christian vision—“Using our God-given gifts to let our light shine”—guides us as we build on our history and look towards the future.
